American Vitagraph Company was formed in March 1897. Vitagraph films were distributed by Edison Manufacturing Company after a Fall 1898 lawsuit. The agreement with Edison expired on 29 January 1900, and on 15 February 1900 the company became The Vitagraph Company of America.
