General release, 21 November 1926. / Standard 35mm spherical 1.33:1 format. / Scenes featuring Edward Connelly as Cardinal Richelieu were cut before the film’s release. The film was released in Austria and Germany in 1927. When their rights to the Sabatini novel expired in 1936, MGM executives opted to not renew them and were then obligated to destroy the film elements, including the original camera negative, for the production. Previously, the only known surviving footage of this film appeared in a surviving theatrical trailer and a brief length of footage seen in King Vidor’s Show People (1928). An incomplete 35mm nitrate print of the film (missing reel three) was recovered in France in 2006, and was the basis for the 2008 reconstruction by Lobster Films, Paris.
