The Gem Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1929, fully restored, and destroyed again by fire 0n 27 February 1934. The theatre was refurbished and reopened in 1936. The reported capacity of the remodeled theatre was [?] 685 or 907? seats; either amount may have been the original capacity.

At one point, the lobby was utilized at a video store retail space.

The building has been partially repaired but it is thought that restoration will not occur.
