The Echo Theatre was a small neighborhood motion picture venue. The original main entrance to the theatre may have been through the mixed-use retail and apartment building still standing on the southwest corner of Hawthorne Boulevard at SE 37th Avenue. The theater may have discontinued operations once Christman built and opened the Bagdad Theatre in 1927, across what is now SE 37th Avenue from the Echo.
Portland’s street numbering changed in 1933. The entrance to the Echo was moved to the side and rear of the main building and the street address became 1515 SE 37th Avenue. The building was subsequently used as a dance hall, a storage space, and a plumbing retail space.
Today, the space is occupied and operated by the Echo Theater Company.
